Turner Gas: Celebrating 70 years

The History of Turner Gas

Turner Gas Company was founded in 1939, not long after Liquefied Petroleum Gas was discovered in the early 1900s. The founders of Turner Gas were Ivan and George Turner, with the help of their father Roy. Roy's experience in Sales and Management for Associated Oil in Marysville, California, in the 1920's, led the boys to pursue a dream of owning a family gas company, Ivan and George Turner took their dream to Bishop, California where they began Turner Gas Company, which served the community for more than 50 years.

In 1941, Ivan married and had four sons to carry on the Turner name. These four men are Tom, John, Jim and Ken Turner; all have had and continue to have vital roles in the daily operations and growth of Turner Gas. With the purchase of a propane transport in 1953, the family realized the opportunities were great for becoming a larger retail and wholesale supplier. Through the years, Turner Gas successfully developed 7 retail locations throughout California and Nevada while continuing to expand its wholesale division.

In 1989 Turner Gas Company made the Strategic decision to sell all retail locations enabling the dramatic growth of its wholesale division. After 65 years Turner Gas continues to be family owned and operated by its first, second, and third generation family members.
